Dreambuilders started in 2001 as a partnership between the Yorkton Catholic School Division (now Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division) and the Yorkton Friendship Centre.
The staff at Dreambuilders truly believes that it takes a community to raise a child. We have based our commitment to our students on that belief. We have earned the trust and reputation in the community as a safe and caring school with patience and compassion offered to all our student.
Our objective is:
Individuals at Dreambuilders will develop an increased level of skills, develop inner confidence and rekindle the desire for further education. This newfound motivation will assist in a smoother transition into the traditional education system. We also strive to focus on the strengths of each individual, family and community.
Our goal is to provide quality alternative education that can be used as a foundation for reentry into the regular education system. An education curriculum in compliance with provincial standards is constructed to suit the needs of each student.
Dreambuilders is part of a shared building operated by SIGN on Broadway, at 345 Broadway Street West in Yorkton.
We operate three divisions:
-
Division III, grades 7 to 9
-
Division IV, grades 10 to 12
-
Transition to Work Program
The divisions have their own work areas with a classroom atmosphere and two team teachers. All students follow the same curriculum as outlined by the Ministry of Education.
We also provide a physical education program at Dreambuilders. We rent the gym at the Gloria Hayden Community Centre. Parts of the program include curling, skating, and bowling.
We provide presentations by community members such as elders, role models, community leaders, public health, drug and alcohol presenters and career oriented speakers. Every week as part of the program we implement cultural activities through talking, sharing circles, and smudging. We also provide the opportunity to the students to participate in the sweat lodge ceremony at least twice per year. We have also provided the students with craft classes such as dream catchers, bead work, drum making and powwow dance demonstrations.
We provide our students with hot nutritious breakfast and lunches on a daily basis, arranged by the nutrition coordinator.
The community liaison worker supports children, youth and families to promote healthy lifestyles, life skills and attendance at school. The primary function is to promote cultural awareness to the students and staff, to help students be successful at school and advocate on behalf of the students and their families.
